  • Computational Scientist II

    Role Description:

    We are currently looking to hire a full-time or part-time Computational Biologist that has experience working with microarray and next generation sequencing data for population genetics. As a Basepaws Computational Biologist, you have the ability to become a leader in the field of cat genetics and pioneer an underfunded research area. 

    At Basepaws there is substantial flexibility to pursue your own research interests provided that necessary responsibilities are completed. There are numerous avenues for advancement and flexibility. You will interact with marketing and executive teams to guide the company and make significant contributions to the company as a whole. You will also have an opportunity to interact with pet owners to understand what they desire out of a genetic test. We have a strong preference toward individuals that are creative and curious about what is currently an understudied field.

    Minimum qualifications:

    • Masters, Ph.D., D.V.M., or M.D. degree in a relevant field (e.g. Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science), or equivalent practical experience.
    • Fluency in at least one of the following programming (C++, Java, C#) and scripting languages (Python, node.js, bash).
    • Capable of conducting computational biology outside of R.
    • Hands-on experience working with various public and proprietary data repositories (e.g. TCGA).
    • Understanding of bioinformatics pipelines for processing and interpreting sequencing data.
    • Strong scientific understanding of molecular biology and genetics.
    • Excellent teamwork, time management, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to recognize, report, and resolve mistakes in analysis and developed algorithms.
    • Strong desire to impact the health of cats.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • 2+ years of experience working in a computational biology or genomics laboratory.
    • Experience in GWAS, eQTL, imputation, and population genetics analysis algorithms.
    • Experience in integrative omics analysis, data mining, pathway analysis, statistics is desirable.
    • Working experience with R.
    • Proficient working in a Unix/Linux environment.

    • Demonstrated ability to design and implement algorithms and methods, especially in collaborative software and data analysis development environments (i.e. source control, code and analysis reviews, API use and definition).

  • Data Infrastructure Engineer

    Role Description:

    We are currently looking to hire a Data Infrastructure Engineer. You will work on building out a data infrastructure on AWS for storage and analysis of large and complex datasets which includes genomics data. You and the team will be responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of the companies new data platform and will focus on infrastructure, design, architecting, building, iterating and optimizing the data environment. You will work closely with bioinformaticians to implement this infrastructure. Genomics knowledge is not necessary, but nice to have. Excellent team and compensation package.

    Your work will contribute meaningfully to core systems, from design --> implementation and you will help solve complex technical problems across all services and at all levels.

    Responsibilities:

    • Develop pipelines for continuous integration/deployment of data infrastructure and full-stack applications on AWS.

    Design the aesthetics to be implemented within our website, app, and other touchpoints, from the layout menus and drop-down options to colors and fonts allowing for interface edits as needed.

    Analyze customer responses and website data to examine high traffic web pages and determine why certain webpages perform better.

    Enhance user experience by creating seamless navigation through various digital programs and interfaces within the company.

    Combine interface design concepts with digital design and establish milestones to encourage cooperation and teamwork.

    Deliver production quality works for developers to build.


    Qualifications:

    3-5 years of demonstrated experience in creating and implementing UX design.

    Proficient with visual design programs such as Adobe Photoshop and others.

    Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment to create top-performing interfaces for clients.

    Understanding HTML, CSS and other web construction technologies to the level design is aligned with professional and practical implementation.

    Continued education and research into UX trends and current design strategy and technologies.

  • Principal Full Stack Developer

    Basepaws is an LA-based leading pet DNA and genetics data company at the forefront of integrating pet health and behavior with genetics. We focus on the use of genetics, computational biology, and machine learning to identify novel genetic factors that influence your pet's health, so we can all take care of our pets better. We are pet lovers, engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs.

    We are currently looking to hire a Principal Full Stack Developer/Tech Lead who is a backend engineer with development skills first, with strong experience building API infrastructure on AWS. The ideal candidate has startup experience (Series A-C). 

    You will be responsible for the development and maintenance of our products and will focus on infrastructure, architecting, building, iterating, and optimizing the admin environment and existing site and products. Maintaining the current system and it’s technologies as well as migrating to new systems.


    Requirements:

    - Experience working in direct-to-consumer companies and brands

    - Experience with modern ecommerce platforms

    - Experience with AWS cloud services: S3, Cloudfront, EC2, API Gateway

    - Experience with various database systems (SQL, noSQL, graph)
